Executive Summary

Not since its heyday in the 1960's has music recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama garnered so much attention on both a national and international scale. Albums and singles cut here have left an indelible mark on the face of popular American music culture, as we know it. The Muscle Shoals Sound can still be heard on television, radio and the internet all over the world. During the recent shopping of the documentary "Muscle Shoals" to distributors, which investigates the evolution of the sound and the individual personalities that fueled the music, film companies all over the world have invested their time and money into the film, making sure it is seen worldwide. The documentary follows the resolution of these personal tensions and conflicts at a very human level. That musical community then creatively manifested into dozens of studios with two rising to the top, FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. The recent availability of the original Muscle Shoals Sound Studio at 3614 Jackson Highway creates a unique opportunity for the Shoals to preserve, as Keith Richards says in describing the studio, "it's Rock and Roll Heaven, man!" No other city or town in America, pound for pound, can lay claim to as rich a musical history as the Shoals.  Over $100,000 has already been raised.  Only $50,000 more to make this historic site alive again...  Our eventual goal is to raise $400,000 to uupgrade the facility and add more exhibit space onto the building.

The foundation envisions a three-prong approach in order to capitalize on our musical heritage in the Shoals:

1.       Acquire 3614 Jackson Highway. Renovate the studio to replicate the actual recording conditions to represent the era of the studio's notoriety as well as upgrade it with other modern technology.

2.       Create a partnership with Fame Studios and the later home of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios on the river that would create tours of three world famous studios in one community.  A feat no other community in the world can lay claim.

3.       Begin a capital campaign to construct a dedicated facility to showcase the Muscle Shoals music history in a Smithsonian quality series of comprehensive exhibits. Again, these three iconic studios would become the centerpiece of the Muscle Shoals Experience and be employed to illustrate the evolution of Muscle Shoals into today's music genres. The facility will also feature revolving exhibits of the hundreds of superstar artists who recorded here.

Cale, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Tex, Eddie Floyd, Johnny Taylor, Art Garfunkel, Milie Jackson, Cat Stevens, Traffic and hundreds of others recorded at this location during this period.  In June 2009, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Muscle Shoals Music Foundation AKA, the Southern Music Foundation has a contract to buy the property with a closing date set for June 14th, 2013.

Product:

3614 Jackson Highway is already a tourist site by way of the amazing music that was recorded there.  With no promotion or marketing, fans have flocked to see the studio over the years by word of mouth only.  The Muscle Shoals Music foundation plans to turn the studio into a full fledged museum, as well as restoring the studio to a world class recording room once again.  The facility will have 4 main income streams, museum admission, studio rental, event space rental and merchandise sales.

Potential fans are located all over the world and anywhere this amazing music is played.  Music fans have proven that they will travel to visit famous locations involved with their favorite music.  Fodor's has a famous "Rock N Roll Travel guide" that lists Muscle Shoals as one of the major music towns to visit with 3614 Jackson Highway, FAME Studios and the second Muscle Shoals Sound Studio at 1000 Alabama Avenue listed prominently

Market:

The Shoals tourism market has expanded dramatically in the years since RSA's Dr. David Bronner announced the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Project in Muscle Shoals along with the 4 Star Marriott Hotel and Convention Center across the Tennessee River in Florence.  This project has been tremendously successful in bringing thousands to the Shoals for conventions, golf, music tourism and more.  The Marriott rates consistently as one of the top Marriott's in the nation in regards to customer satisfaction.   The Marriott utilizes Muscle Shoals music as its backdrop featuring famous photos from the recording studios in the Shoals in their Swamper's bar and restaurant, and the Sam Phillips Suite. Muscle Shoals Music plays throughout the hotel and convention center daily.

In 2013, Muscle Shoals will be highlighted worldwide by the award winning film, "Muscle Shoals", featuring its historic music industry.  The film has recently been selected for distribution by Mark Cuban's Magnolia Pictures and PBS has bought the domestic network broadcast rights.  The film has appeared at the Sundance Film Festival, SXSW film Festival as well as the Boulder film festival, where it won the Grand Prize.  In late April the film will appear at Sundance London, where the filmmakers expect to pick up European distribution.

3614 is spotlighted in the film with Keith Richards saying of the studio, "It's Rock N Roll Heaven!" The film, along with the location's already historic status in the recording world promises to send tourists by the bus load to the Sheffield location.  Museums such as the Alabama Music Hall of Fame have previously had to beg visitors to make the trip, while 3614 Jackson Highway and FAME have been drawing tourists for years, for no other reason than the legacy of what happened there.  Even with no tours advertised, music lovers come just to see the building and with the hope that they might see inside.

Memberships:

3614 will also be supported by sponsorship packages.  There will be 5 VIP levels of Membership.  The top level being the "Swamper" level, the "Rhythm Section" level, the "Soloist" level  and the "Starving Artist" level.  Each of these levels receive specific benefits with the Swamper level being a privileged VIP group receiving unlimited admission to museum and VIP backstage treatment at all events, , museum merchandise, plaque recognition in the museum, 1 free event space rental per year, and newsletters.

Strategy:

The Shoals area has something that other communities all over the world would love to have, the Muscle Shoals Music legacy!!!  No other community can lay claim to "The Muscle Shoals Sound".  This fact has been highly overlooked for decades by our leaders.  The Muscle Shoals Music Foundation would like to change this situation starting with the purchase of 3614 Jackson Highway.  With this purchase, the studio triangle tour of FAME Studios and the two former Muscle Shoals Sound buildings is a reality.  The Shoals will then lay claim to 3 historic recording studios that can be toured daily.  A tourism fact that no other community can offer!  The marketing opportunities will be over the top for local and state tourism groups.  We would also tie into the planned Americana Music Triangle which runs down the Natchez Trace from Nashville, the Shoals and Memphis.

3614 will also be promoted through its current social media presence.  The museum's facebook page has over 9,180 Likes with basically no promotion or activity on the site since 2011.  The website will be completely overhauled to a more modern feel and look adding an online store to sell T-shirts, hats, mugs, posters and music.  Tours will be scheduled online as well as online ticket purchasing.

The property will also host regularly scheduled mini concerts. These concerts will be broadcast Live on the web, with the digital archive being available to watch or be licensed by TV and film companies.  The facility will also host regularly scheduled dinner shows with food catered by a featured top Shoals area restaurant for each event.  These shows will feature different styles of music, comedy and storytelling.   Another type of event is "Lunch with a Star".  These events will be a catered meal at 3614, with a legendary singer, musician, producer, actor, athlete or celebrity..  The event will be limited to a very intimate group to give the attendee ample opportunity to dine and speak with the chosen celebrity.    Other events could include films such as the "Muscle Shoals" film and other music related films.

The foundation's initial efforts will focus on securing the 3614 Jackson Highway Studio site and restoring it to its original condition. The studio will serve as both a museum, studio and event venue, as well as housing the foundation and Alabama Music Hall of fame offices. The foundation will further expand its mission by working in cooperation with Fame Studios and the second former Muscle Shoals Sound Studio on the river at 1000 Alabama Avenue in Sheffield as well as developing a Muscle Shoals Music exhibit in a to be determined location.
